Below the Black Canyon, east of Montrose, the gorge is full of natural wonders
and diverse recreational opportunities. The Gunnison River has been tumbling
through the spectacular canyon for millions of years, exposing polished black
rock walls and sculpted red sandstone. Big horn sheep, elk, deer, wintering bald
eagle and migratory water fowl wander through the gorge.
The 64,000 acre special
recreation area offers Gold Medal trout fishing, fantastic whitewater boating,
hiking, mountain biking and designated ORV area.
The river, in the heart of a
22,000-acre proposed wilderness, can be reached via four hiking trails which can
