Gunnison Gorge

Below the Black Canyon, east of Montrose, the gorge is full of natural wonders and diverse recreational opportunities. The Gunnison River has been tumbling through the spectacular canyon for millions of years, exposing polished black rock walls and sculpted red sandstone. Big horn sheep, elk, deer, wintering bald eagle and migratory water fowl wander through the gorge.

The 64,000 acre special recreation area offers Gold Medal trout fishing, fantastic whitewater boating, hiking, mountain biking and designated ORV area.

The river, in the heart of a 22,000-acre proposed wilderness, can be reached via four hiking trails which can be accessed from Falcon Road. Montrose Public Lands (970) 240-5300.
