Over a million acres comprise some of the most spectacular views, as well as our
National Forests' best hunting and wildlife watching. The northern portion lies
on the crest and slopes of the rolling, mesa-like Uncompahgre Plateau and the
southern portion on the rugged northern slopes of the San Juan Mountains.
Colorful aspen intermingled with spruce and pine are spectacular in the fall.
Major mountains include Uncompahgre Peak (14,309 ft.), Mt. Sneffels (14,150
ft.), and Wetterhorn Peak (14,017 ft.). Tumbling streams fed by banks of
perpetual snow culminate in beautiful waterfalls.
Fishing, hunting, camping,
hiking and snow activities are allowed. Located south of Montrose. Montrose
